Meet Kerri

Kerri Sterrett, MA, LPC is an EMDR Certified Therapist and EMDR Approved Consultant through the EMDR International Association.   She is the owner of Denver Wellness Counseling and holds a number of other professional roles, including Adjunct Professor for Regis University’s Counseling Program and an Instructor for Colorado’s Parenting After Divorce.  Kerri has a great deal of experience in training, education, supervision, and consultation, including time spent as the Clinical Director of a large family agency, and teaching at both the High School and MA Graduate School level.  Kerri currently provides professional consultation to growing clinicians specific to trauma work and EMDR.

Kerri has over 14 years in professional counseling, specializing in helping clients recover from trauma, PTSD, dysfunctional family systems, depression, anxiety, panic, life transitions and grief.  Kerri combines expertise in EMDR with attachment-based, somatic, and ego-state techniques to best support her client’s healing journey.  Kerri enjoys working with clients who perhaps have tried traditional “talk-therapy” with limited success, and who are ready to dive into deeper work of exploring their life experiences, healing emotional wounds, and breaking free from old, unhelpful patterns of interacting with the world.  Kerri’s approach is engaging, heartfelt, and centers on building meaningful connections.

Q&A

What do you love about your job?

I am inspired by the clients I work with. I am honored to journey with my clients, through their pain, into the light of hope and joy. I am always reminded of the resiliency and goodness of people, particularly those who have experienced true pain, and show up with the intention to heal so they can be the best versions of their authentic selves. These are the warriors, who have experienced hard things, but are bravely doing the hard work of self-healing.

What makes therapy with you different than other therapists I may have seen?

When I have initial consultations with new clients, I always inquire about past therapy. I often hear a similar story, of people having “nice” experiences with past therapists, but not feeling like they made any lasting change. Often people describe their past therapy experiences as something like this:  “We just talked about whatever was happening that week. It was nice to be listened to, but I’m not sure we had any specific goals.”

Though I believe in the power of being seen and heard in therapy, I also believe that clients deserve progress towards a specific goal by implementing tools and techniques that are effective (and researched) in treating specific symptoms and reducing client suffering. Talking (connecting) is a big part of therapy, but we will also be creating goals, making a plan, implementing powerful interventions, and tracking progress.

What are you about outside of work?

Right now my family is all about adventuring in our restored family van from the 80’s. Thanks to the Pandemic, we had to figure out another way to see out-of-state family. Our perfect solution was to join the van-life movement. In the Fall of 2020 we packed our family of 4 into the van and traveled all the way to Atlanta, GA.  Our next trip is a road trip around this beautiful state.

Otherwise, I can be found parenting, reading, listening to podcasts, snowboarding, and cooking (though this is a work in progress).

If you weren’t a counselor, what would you do professionally?

Psychology is the love of my life, but my FIRST love was Science/Medicine. In college, between classes,  I could typically be found in one of two places - a research lab that specialized in breast cancer or working as a nursing assistant on the oncology floor of Fletcher Allen Hospital. Now, if I couldn’t be a counselor, I would probably merge my interest in psychology with science and do something in neurobiology research.

What is your go-to stress reliever?

My active mind can turn anxious on occasion. In these moments I will distract myself with things that break my hyper-awareness of my personal bubble. Recently this has been a podcast about space exploration or picking up a book that lives on my bedside table - A Short History of the World by H.G.Wells.
